Balzan and Melita Remain Neck-and-Neck After Midweek BOV Challenge League Action

Joint-leaders Balzan and Melita both claimed important victories on Wednesday to maintain their position at the summit as four matches were played in the BOV Challenge League.
Balzan Edge Fgura with Late Penalty
At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Balzan secured a hard-fought 2–1 win over Fgura United.
Gabriel Santos fired Balzan into the lead after 23 minutes, but Fgura struck back shortly after the break through Andrew Xuereb on 53 minutes.
Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Balzan were awarded a penalty five minutes from time. Oluwatobiloba Dimeji Awosanya kept his composure from the spot, delivering the decisive goal and preserving Balzan’s place at the top.
Yepez Brace Seals Melita Victory
In the second match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Melita overcame Mgarr United with a 3–1 victory.
The Amateurs made a dream start when Quadri Olanshile Allionida converted a penalty inside the opening five minutes. Mgarr’s Jurgen Debono levelled matters on 25 minutes, but Melita would regain control before the break.
Jesus Yepez struck twice — on 43 and 79 minutes — to take his side to three crucial points and maintain the joint-lead with Balzan.
Marsa Claim First Win Under New Coach
At the Centenary Stadium, Marsa clinched a confidence-boosting 3–1 win over Swieqi United.
Gabriel Diego Farrugia opened the scoring inside the first minute, giving Marsa the perfect platform. Swieqi equalised on the stroke of half-time through Daniel Agius, but Marsa found another gear after the break.
Gianluca Bugeja restored their lead on 73 minutes, before a late goal sealed an important victory that lifts them off the bottom group.
St. Andrews Impress in Win Over Pietà
In the evening’s final match, St. Andrews produced an excellent performance to defeat Pietà Hotspurs 3–1, also at the Centenary Stadium.
Mattia Galliano opened the scoring for the Saints on 28 minutes, only for Emmanuel Bio to level six minutes later.
Early in the second half, Duvan Mosquera Torres struck to make it 2–1, and Galliano completed his brace on 58 minutes to secure the win.
