Straka surges into slender lead ahead of Scheffler at Hero World Challenge

Austrian Sepp Straka soared to the top of the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Saturday, firing two eagles and four birdies in an eight-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over two-time defending champion Scottie Scheffler.
Straka’s round at Albany Golf Club in Nassau was the day’s best, giving him a 54-hole total of 17-under 199 heading into Sunday’s final round of the unofficial 20-man tournament hosted by Tiger Woods.
World number one Scheffler held the solo lead through 15 holes but stumbled with two bogeys in the final three, carding a 65 for a total of 200.
“I played pretty nicely,” Straka said. “On the front nine, I didn’t make many putts early on, but the putter felt good around the turn. My iron play was really solid, though I struggled a bit with the driver.”
Straka, a two-time PGA Tour winner this year and a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning team in September, had withdrawn from two European Tour playoff events to spend time at home in Georgia with his wife Paige when their premature two-month-old son was discharged from the hospital in August.
Both Straka and Scheffler began the day one stroke behind a group of five tied at 10-under. Straka birdied the par-five third, chipped in for eagle at the sixth, and added birdies at the seventh, ninth, and 11th holes, including a 19-foot putt. He capped his charge with a 17-foot eagle at the 15th.
