Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen produced a late charge on Saturday to fire a five-under-par 66 and seize the lead heading into the final round of the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne, while Rory McIlroy recovered from an early setback to remain within striking distance.

Among the home favourites, Cam Smith endured a shaky opening with a bogey at the sixth, but the 2022 Open champion responded superbly on the back nine — highlighted by an eagle at the 14th — to sign for a 66. The 32-year-old held the lead through 17 holes before a closing bogey dropped him back, allowing Neergaard-Petersen to leapfrog him with three consecutive birdies and reach 14-under overall.

“I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff out there today and didn’t feel as comfortable over the ball,” said Smith, who now sits in a share of second alongside Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim. “But I just went through the process, hit the right shots and didn’t shy away. I’m happy I did that — that’s what I was most impressed with.”

McIlroy recovers from unusual double bogey

Five-time major winner McIlroy got off to another nervy start, making a double bogey at the second after an unlucky lie left his ball resting on a banana peel in the rough. To avoid penalty, the Northern Irishman was forced to play it as it lay.

But McIlroy steadied himself quickly, finishing strongly once again to return a 68. He heads into Sunday at five-under, nine shots behind the leader.

“I didn’t get off to the greatest of starts but I felt I responded well,” he said. “I’ll probably be a little too far behind to try to challenge on Sunday but I will try to end the week on a positive note and shoot my lowest score.”
