Blunt Leipzig held by Gladbach in frustrating 0–0 draw

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s winless run against current top-half Bundesliga opponents extended to seven matches after a drab goalless draw with RB Leipzig at Borussia-Park.
The opening phase offered little for the neutral, with both sides cautiously probing without producing any real threat. A wildly overhit David Raum free-kick summed up the lack of quality on display, though Leipzig’s record of scoring eight of their ten away league goals before halftime this season served as a reminder that Gladbach could ill afford lapses in concentration. The visitors underlined that point 10 minutes before the interval when Conrad Harder unleashed a fierce 30-yard strike that skimmed past the post.
Despite Leipzig dictating much of the play before the break, they struggled to find a way through a disciplined Gladbach defence, resorting mostly to speculative efforts from distance. Yan Diomandé demonstrated the futility of such attempts on the stroke of halftime, launching a shot so high it sailed over both the bar and the home ultras packed behind the goal.
The second half promised more entertainment, and Gladbach delivered early. Within two minutes of the restart, Rocco Reitz lifted a delicate pass over the Leipzig back line for Franck Honorat, whose deflected effort slid under Peter Gulácsi—only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.
Leipzig attempted to shift the momentum with a double substitution midway through the half, but the changes had little positive impact. Instead, it was a Gladbach replacement who nearly made the breakthrough. Shuto Machino drifted into the area and appeared to be clipped by Willi Orbán, prompting referee Timo Gerach to point to the spot. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, he overturned the decision.
Both teams pushed for a late winner in the closing minutes, but neither could find the decisive touch. The stalemate ultimately serves neither side particularly well—Gladbach’s European ambitions gain no ground, while Leipzig’s faint title hopes remain just as distant.
