Como will head into December sitting inside Serie A’s top six after a convincing 2-0 victory over Sassuolo at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia — a result that extends their impressive unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 matches (W6, D6).

Given Como’s perfect record of scoring within the first 15 minutes of home league games this season, it came as little shock when Cesc Fàbregas’ side struck early once again. After 14 minutes, Alberto Moreno’s effort took a fortunate deflection and fell kindly to Anastasios Douvikas inside the six-yard box, where the Greek forward calmly slotted home to open the scoring.

Despite dominating possession as the first half progressed, Como found clear-cut chances hard to come by. Sassuolo, buoyed by a strong recent away record — 10 points from their previous 12 on the road — kept their shape well, limiting the hosts to speculative efforts from distance. Arijanet Muric remained largely untroubled, with Nico Paz’s powerful strike towards the top corner six minutes before halftime the closest Como came to doubling their lead.

The restart brought more of the same, and Como wasted little time reinforcing their advantage. Just eight minutes into the second half, Moreno turned from provider to scorer, racing in to meet Paz’s cross and beating Muric in the air with a well-timed header. Douvikas nearly made it 3-0 moments later, only for Muric to deny him with a sharp save across goal.

Sassuolo briefly rallied in search of a lifeline but failed to carve out any meaningful opportunities. As the match entered its final stages, it was Como who again looked the more likely to score, though Muric prevented further damage. By then, however, the outcome was long beyond doubt.

Building on last season’s impressive 10th-place finish after promotion, Como have shown no signs of the typical sophomore slump. Instead, they’ve emerged as one of Serie A’s most consistent and organised sides — and their current European push may yet become something historic. As the weekend concludes, they remain within striking distance of Roma (1st) and Napoli (3rd), who face each other on Sunday, leaving Fàbregas’ men tantalisingly close to an even loftier position in the table.
