Bologna on fire as they crush Salzburg for vital Europa League victory

Bologna’s impressive run of form continued with a 4-1 victory over FC Red Bull Salzburg in an exciting UEFA Europa League clash at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
The Rossoblu entered the match unbeaten in 11 games across all competitions and started strongly, almost taking the lead in the 18th minute. Riccardo Orsolini’s driving run into the box ended with a powerful effort saved by Alexander Schlager, before Jens Odgaard missed a golden rebound chance.
Odgaard soon made up for the earlier miss, capitalizing on Salzburg’s failure to clear the ball properly. The forward drilled a low shot into the net to secure his second Europa League goal of the season and put Bologna ahead.
Salzburg, however, responded before the break. The visitors struck on the counterattack around the half-hour mark, as Edmund Baidoo was set up by Yorbe Vertessen. Baidoo’s initial shot was parried by Federico Ravaglia, but Vertessen followed up to slot home the equalizer.
As the first half progressed, the match opened up. Bologna nearly regained the lead before halftime: Thijs Dallinga’s close-range strike was brilliantly saved by Schlager, and Tommaso Pobega squandered another promising opportunity shortly afterward.
The hosts raised their intensity after the break, and Salzburg struggled to cope. A pinpoint through ball from Juan Miranda found Dallinga in the box, and the striker’s composed finish restored Bologna’s advantage.
Just two minutes later, Federico Bernardeschi extended the lead, rising high to meet Nadir Zortea’s superb cross with a powerful header.
Salzburg continued to push for a response, with Ravaglia making two vital saves. Substitute Petar Ratkov thought he had scored midway through the second half, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for a marginal offside. Ratkov’s frustration continued when his later effort struck the bar in the 83rd minute.
Bologna put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages when Orsolini finished from close range to seal a comprehensive 4-1 win.
The victory boosts Bologna’s hopes of finishing the group stage in the top eight and moves them into the top 20 of the overall table. Meanwhile, Salzburg’s hopes of reaching the knockout play-offs are in serious jeopardy after their fourth defeat in five group matches.
