Maccabi Tel Aviv, reduced to 10 men late on, suffered their fourth consecutive UEFA Europa League group-stage defeat as they were dismantled 6-0 by Olympique Lyonnais at the TSC Arena.

Lyon, eager to snap a five-match winless streak across all competitions, came out with intent and needed only four minutes to break the deadlock. Corentin Tolisso, a constant threat with his surging runs into the area, saw his close-range strike deflect into the path of Abner, who was waiting unmarked at the back post to slot home.

The Israeli side struggled to fashion opportunities and had even greater difficulty keeping tabs on Tolisso. The midfielder sent an early warning when he poked narrowly wide at the near post, but they were punished soon after. Static defending inside the six-yard box allowed Tolisso to rise and head in after Abner floated a delicate cross to the far post.

Lyon’s dominance only grew, and just after the half-hour mark they added a third. Pavel Šulc was barged over inside the area, leaving Moussa Niakhaté to dispatch the penalty with composure, guiding it into the bottom corner.

Any remote hope of a Maccabi revival vanished moments into the second half as Tolisso completed his hat-trick. More slack marking enabled him to drift free at the back post to head home Šulc’s delivery five minutes after the restart, before he added his third of the night by tapping in another precise cutback from the Czech midfielder.

The introduction of substitutes did nothing to slow Lyon’s momentum. Within minutes of entering the pitch, Adam Karabec made it 6-0 with a tidy finish from a tight angle.

Maccabi’s miserable night was capped in stoppage time when Sagiv Yehezkel picked up a second yellow card, leaving his side a man short and without a single shot on target.

The result appears to set both teams on clear trajectories in the group. Lyon, now on 12 points from five matches, are effectively guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds. Maccabi Tel Aviv, stuck on one point and carrying the worst goal difference of all 36 group-stage teams, would likely need to win all three of their remaining games to keep even the faintest hope of progressing.
