Liverpool’s crisis worsens after shock defeat to PSV

Liverpool’s alarming slump deepened as they suffered a disastrous 4-1 defeat at home to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League — their third straight loss, each one featuring at least three goals conceded.
With Arne Slot already under mounting pressure, the night began in the worst possible fashion. Virgil van Dijk inexplicably handled a PSV corner inside the box, gifting the visitors an early penalty. Ivan Perišić stepped up and calmly slotted into the bottom corner to put the Dutch side in front.
Unlike Saturday’s flat response in their defeat to Nottingham Forest, Liverpool reacted quickly this time. Cody Gakpo forced a save from Matej Kovář, and Dominik Szoboszlai was perfectly placed to tap in the rebound from close range.
PSV briefly thought they had reclaimed the lead when Yarek Gasiorowski converted from inside the six-yard area, but the celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.
Liverpool dominated much of the first half, coming within inches of turning the game around when Van Dijk’s towering header cannoned off the underside of the bar. Moments later, Kovář produced a superb one-handed save to deny Hugo Ekitike, preserving parity at the break.
But despite Liverpool’s pressure, it was PSV who struck next. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Mauro Júnior split the defence with a beautifully weighted pass, and Guus Til finished clinically to restore PSV’s advantage.
The Reds’ problems mounted when Ekitike limped off, forcing a like-for-like change with Alexander Isak. And things continued to unravel. Ibrahima Konaté’s costly error allowed Ricardo Pepi to race through; although his shot struck the post, Couhaib Driouech reacted fastest to tap in PSV’s third.
Slot turned to Federico Chiesa late on in search of a miracle, but Liverpool were already sinking. Deep into stoppage time, Driouech added his second of the night, sealing a historic victory for PSV and triggering a mass Anfield exodus.
The final whistle left Slot facing even greater scrutiny as Liverpool’s crisis shows no sign of easing — while PSV celebrated one of the most memorable European nights in their history.
