Austria snatch late equalizer against Bosnia & Herzegovina to seal first World Cup berth since 1998

Austria secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup after earning the crucial point they needed in a tense 1–1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion — a result that consigns Sergej Barbarez’s side to a place in the playoffs.
Despite the magnitude of the occasion, both teams started with urgency rather than caution. The visitors struck first, silencing the home crowd in the 12th minute when Haris Tabaković punished slack Austrian defending by rising highest in a crowded six-yard box to head home and give the Golden Lilies an early lead.
The setback seemed to rattle Austria, who struggled to create clear chances. It wasn’t until the 35th minute that Ralf Rangnick’s men tested Nikola Vasilj, with Nicolas Seiwald unleashing a fierce 20-yard strike that the Bosnian goalkeeper parried to safety.
Late in the first half, the stadium erupted when Austria thought they had equalized, only for VAR to intervene. Konrad Laimer’s drilled effort from outside the area found the corner via the post, but after consulting the pitchside monitor, the referee ruled that Laimer had fouled Amar Memić during the buildup — a decision met with disbelief from the home supporters.
The second half opened at a frenetic pace. Patrick Wimmer narrowly missed with a close-range header just minutes after the restart, before Tabaković squandered a golden chance to double Bosnia’s advantage when the ball bounced off him in front of goal before he could react.
As Austria’s hopes of automatic qualification began to waver, Michael Gregoritsch delivered when it mattered most. After a ricochet off the crossbar in the 77th minute and Vasilj’s failed attempt to clear, the Brøndby striker reacted quickest to smash the loose ball into the net, sparking jubilation throughout Vienna.
Bosnia threw men forward in a desperate search for a late winner, but Austria nearly punished them on the counter. Gregoritsch once again found himself in a scoring position, though Vasilj denied him smartly to keep the match level.
The draw confirms Austria as winners of Group H, having collected seven victories from eight matches, and secures their first World Cup finals appearance since 1998. Bosnia and Herzegovina now turn their attention to Thursday’s UEFA playoff draw as they look to keep their qualification hopes alive.
