Matthijs de Ligt: Manchester United’s Mr. Reliable in times of crisis

As Manchester United continue to wrestle with inconsistency under Rúben Amorim, one player has quietly become a pillar of dependability: Matthijs de Ligt.

When the 26-year-old defender joined United from Bayern Munich, few could have imagined the turbulence that would follow — a club-record low Premier League finish and a painful defeat to Tottenham in a European final. Yet, amid the chaos of the past 18 months, De Ligt has emerged as a steadying force in an otherwise unsettled side.

A cornerstone in Amorim’s rebuild

De Ligt has become one of the first names on Amorim’s team sheet, his composure and consistency helping to anchor a defence that’s finally beginning to find balance.

At the start of the season, with the bulk of United’s transfer budget spent on attacking reinforcements, Amorim was left to choose between De Ligt and Harry Maguire for the central role in his back three. De Ligt won the spot — and has since been United’s standout performer in defence.

Both defenders share a similar profile: unglamorous but vital, willing to take on the gritty, often overlooked work that lets others shine. Neither is blessed with blistering pace, but both excel at reading the game and cleaning up danger when United’s more adventurous centre-backs step forward.

Even when Amorim shifted De Ligt to the right of the back three in the 2–2 draw with Spurs on November 8, his brief was clear — halt opposition attacks first, worry about building play later. Fittingly, he capped that disciplined display with a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser.

Consistency built on clarity

Last season, De Ligt suffered from United’s defensive instability. Lisandro Martínez’s ACL injury, coupled with fitness issues for Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw, forced Amorim into constant reshuffles. But this term, there’s finally a sense of structure.

De Ligt and Shaw have started all 11 Premier League matches, while Yoro, Maguire, and Noussair Mazraoui rotate for the third spot — a far cry from last season’s uncertainty.

The numbers behind De Ligt’s dominance

Statistically, De Ligt’s performances have been among the best in Europe’s top leagues.

5.4 clearances per 90 minutes — the highest of any United player.

0.5 blocks per 90, just behind Casemiro.

18 successful tackles, 62 duels won, 40 aerial duels, and 13 interceptions across 11 games.

Equally impressive is his discipline: just five fouls all season and no cards — remarkable for a centre-back tasked with absorbing relentless pressure.

Amorim’s verdict: excellence with room to grow

Amorim has praised De Ligt’s defensive work but wants to see more from him in possession.

“He’s doing really well — aggressive, defending excellently,” said Amorim. “But he has more quality on the ball than he’s showing. Right now, he’s focused on avoiding mistakes, which is smart. But when we reach the next level as a team, our centre-backs must control the tempo and quality of the game.”

The verdict

United remain a work in progress — unpredictable, sometimes fortunate in their recent wins over Chelsea and Liverpool, but showing signs of resilience.

At the heart of that resilience is Matthijs de Ligt, whose calm assurance has given Amorim a foundation to build upon. After years of searching for stability, United may finally have found their rock — and De Ligt, at last, looks every bit the leader he promised to be when he first broke through at Ajax.
