Bologna Secures Impressive Victory Over Napoli, Moves Just One Point from Top Spot

Napoli squandered the opportunity to move three points clear at the top of Serie A after falling to a 2-0 defeat against an in-form Bologna side at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
The opening stages were scrappy and disjointed, with both sides struggling to find rhythm. The first real chance came midway through the first half when Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí headed narrowly wide from a well-delivered corner.
Moments later, Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić was called into action, reacting sharply to push away Jonathan Rowe’s powerful long-range effort. At the other end, Thijs Dallinga wasted a golden opportunity for the hosts, nodding wide from a promising position.
Frequent stoppages prevented either team from building momentum, and the first half ended goalless after a cagey 45 minutes.
The match came to life shortly after the restart. In the 50th minute, Bologna broke the deadlock through Dallinga, who raced onto Nicolo Cambiaghi’s precise pass and finished neatly at the near post to send the home crowd into raptures.
Things went from bad to worse for Antonio Conte’s men as Bologna doubled their lead midway through the second half. Lucumí atoned for his earlier miss by heading home his first Serie A goal of the season after Napoli failed to clear their lines.
Napoli’s second-half display offered little in the way of response, registering an expected goals (xG) of just 0.05 after the break. Credit, however, must go to Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna, who executed their tactical plan to perfection. Seventeen-year-old substitute goalkeeper Massimo Pessina also impressed, showing remarkable composure to handle everything Napoli threw at him.
The victory extends Bologna’s unbeaten run in all competitions to ten matches and lifts them to fifth in the Serie A table—just a point off the top.
For Napoli, another toothless attacking display will be cause for concern as the reigning champions slip to second place behind AC Milan.
