Nico Williams Returns to Scoring Ways as Athletic Club Edge Past Real Oviedo

Athletic Club edged Luis Carrión’s Real Oviedo 1-0 in their first LaLiga meeting in nearly 25 years, extending Los Azules’ winless streak to six matches across all competitions (D2, L4).
Athletic started the match confidently, dominating possession and looking more likely to break the deadlock, though Aaron Escandell remained largely untested in the opening stages.
That changed in the 25th minute when Nico Williams lit up the contest with a brilliant solo goal. Skipping past Oviedo defenders, he surged into the box and smashed the ball off the underside of the crossbar to give the hosts the lead.
Oviedo responded immediately, as Ilyas Chaira poked a looping ball through Unai Simón’s legs, only for a tight offside call to deny the leveller. Simón would later make a smart save to deny Leander Dendoncker just before halftime, keeping Athletic in control.
With just seven league goals scored this season, Oviedo faced a tough second half. Clear-cut chances remained rare, and Athletic were forced into a substitution as Williams, recovering from injury, was replaced.
Despite his departure, Ernesto Valverde’s side maintained control, peppering the Oviedo goal with speculative efforts. Alex Berenguer came closest to doubling the lead but fired off-target from a tight angle. Simón stayed alert to mop up a rare Oviedo attack, ensuring all three points stayed in Bilbao.
The defeat leaves Oviedo anchored at the bottom of the table, now without a league win in five games (D2, L3). They remain just one point shy of safety in a congested bottom six. Athletic, meanwhile, halted a three-game winless streak, climbing to seventh in the table with only their second away LaLiga victory of the season.
