Pafos claim first League Phase victory with narrow win over Villarreal

Pafos pulled off a sensational 1-0 victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) League Phase, as Derrick Luckassen’s towering header sealed the Cypriot side’s first-ever win at this stage of the competition.
Both teams entered the match still searching for their first league-phase triumph, and the early stages reflected that urgency. Within minutes, Domingos Quina and Nicolas Pépé both went close at either end, setting a lively tone in Pafos.
Villarreal soon carved out two clear chances in quick succession, but Georges Mikautadze squandered a golden opportunity, and Pafos goalkeeper Neofytos Michail was alert to rush out and deny Pape Gueye.
After weathering that spell, Pafos tightened up defensively, restricting their Spanish visitors to half-chances while enjoying tidy possession spells of their own. Pépé grew increasingly frustrated in his duel with Ken Sema, and a poor touch from the Villarreal winger allowed David Goldar to clear a dangerous situation following a loose pass.
Santiago Mourino blazed a shot high over the bar, and Ayoze Pérez’s tame header was comfortably gathered by Michail, summing up a first half that lacked finishing quality.
The breakthrough came moments after the restart. Pafos, playing with renewed belief, took the lead in a UCL proper match for the first time in their history when Luckassen rose powerfully to head home Sema’s corner.
Buoyed by the goal, the hosts grew in confidence — Quina tested the keeper from distance while Villarreal struggled to respond. Gueye fired wildly off target and Pérez headed over as frustration mounted for Marcelino’s men.
The Villarreal boss made all five substitutions in quick succession to chase an equaliser, with debutant Tani Oluwaseyi forcing a save soon after coming on. Pépé then sent a fierce drive just wide, and another Gueye effort was bravely blocked as Pafos dug deep to preserve their slender lead.
Despite relentless late pressure, Gerard Moreno nodded wide and Santi Comesaña’s long-range strike was saved by the inspired Michail. When the final whistle blew, Pafos had not only secured a famous win but also their third clean sheet of the league phase — becoming the first Cypriot club since November 2011 to claim victory at this stage of the Champions League.
For Villarreal, the defeat compounds a frustrating campaign — they remain winless with just one point from four matches and have failed to score in each of their losses.
