Samsunspor eye third straight European win as Ħamrun Spartans seek first Conference League points

Samsunspor will look to maintain their perfect start in the UEFA Conference League when they welcome Maltese champions Ħamrun Spartans to the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium. The Turkish side have been in impressive form both in Europe and domestically, and they’ll be keen to extend their unbeaten streak while cementing their place among the competition’s early frontrunners.
This marks Samsunspor’s first major European campaign since their 1998 Intertoto Cup appearance, and they’ve made the most of their long-awaited return. Two consecutive league phase victories have propelled them into contention, forming part of a broader nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions (W5, D4). The Red Lightning head into this clash after a confident 3-1 win in the Turkish Super Lig, and their last home outing in Europe—a 3-0 dismantling of Dynamo Kyiv—suggests they’ll approach this fixture with similar attacking intent.

However, home form has been unpredictable for the Black Sea club, with differing results in each of their last eight matches on their own turf (W3, D4, L1). Despite that, their recent resilience and firepower make them firm favourites against a Ħamrun side still adapting to the demands of continental competition.
For the Spartans, history has already been made. Giacomo Modica’s men became the first Maltese team to reach the league phase of a European competition, a milestone achievement that has boosted Maltese football’s profile. Yet, their journey so far in the group has been challenging, with back-to-back 1-0 defeats leaving them at the foot of the table. Still, they arrive in Turkey on the back of a three-match unbeaten run domestically (W2, D1) and will aim to channel that form into their European efforts.

Their away record, however, offers little encouragement—Ħamrun have failed to win any of their five continental trips this season (D1, L4) and have conceded at least twice in four of those outings. Scoring has also been a struggle; they’ve been held scoreless in seven of their last nine UEFA defeats.
The matchup will be the first-ever competitive meeting between clubs from Turkey and Malta, adding a touch of novelty to the occasion.
Key Players to Watch:
Samsunspor’s dynamic forward Marius has been a standout performer, directly contributing to goals in two of his last five appearances for club and country. He also netted and assisted before half-time in the club’s last Conference League home match, making him one to watch once again. For Ħamrun, Vincenzo Polito impressed in their recent narrow European defeat, winning ten of his 12 duels without conceding a single foul—a performance his side will hope he can replicate against stronger opposition.
Team News:
Samsunspor are expected to be without midfielder Olivier Ntcham due to injury, while Ħamrun have no new fitness concerns ahead of the trip.
With Samsunspor’s attacking quality and Ħamrun’s defensive vulnerabilities, the Turkish outfit appear poised to extend their winning European run—though the Maltese visitors will fight to make further history by claiming their first-ever Conference League points.
