The Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) has taken note of a report published by The Times of Malta on June 8, 2026, concerning the findings of a Malta Gaming Authority investigation into sports betting activity within the local water polo community.

The ASA is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and has closely monitored the ongoing investigation.

Based on the reports and evidence made available to the Association to date, there is currently no prima facie evidence of match-fixing or any coordinated illegal activity that would warrant a criminal investigation.

Throughout the process, the ASA has maintained close communication with both European Aquatics and World Aquatics, with the latter leading the investigation.

Recognising the importance of protecting the integrity of the sport, the ASA believes that regular education and awareness initiatives on sports betting are essential. To this end, the Association is developing dedicated programmes that will be introduced to clubs and players in the coming months.

The ASA remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of water polo by investing in preventive measures, education, and good governance, ensuring the long-term wellbeing and credibility of the sport for all those involved.
