From pioneers to global contenders

Morocco’s Journey in FIFA World Cup History
Morocco have long been one of Africa’s most respected football nations, but their performances at the FIFA World Cup have elevated them into global prominence. The Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a FIFA World Cup during the unforgettable Qatar 2022 tournament.
Morocco first appeared at the World Cup in Mexico 1970 and have since qualified for seven editions: 1970, 1986, 1994, 1998, 2018, 2022 and 2026. Their breakthrough came in 1986 when they became the first African team to top a World Cup group, advancing to the Round of 16 in Mexico.
However, it was Qatar 2022 that transformed Morocco’s reputation forever. Under coach Walid Regragui, the Atlas Lions defeated Belgium, Spain and Portugal on their historic run to the semi-finals. Their quarter-final victory over Portugal made them the first African nation ever to reach the final four of the competition.
The team’s disciplined defending, tactical organisation and passionate support captured worldwide admiration. Morocco eventually finished fourth after defeats to France and Croatia, but their achievement changed perceptions of African football on the global stage.
How Morocco Qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Morocco secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in dominant fashion by finishing top of CAF Qualification Group E. The Atlas Lions won all six of their opening qualification matches and officially booked their place with a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger in Rabat.
During qualification, Morocco defeated Tanzania twice, overcame Zambia, crushed Congo 6-0 and beat Niger home and away. Striker Ayoub El Kaabi finished as their leading scorer during the campaign.
Qualification for the 2026 tournament marks Morocco’s third consecutive World Cup appearance — a first in the nation’s history. It also confirms their status as one of Africa’s leading football powers ahead of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
