Malta FA Honours Clayton Failla and Steve Borg on Final Domestic Appearances

The Malta FA paid tribute to former Malta internationals Clayton Failla and Steve Borg ahead of their final appearances in domestic football during Saturday’s Meridianbet FA Trophy Final.
Before kick-off, Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo presented both players with commemorative shirts in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Maltese football and their long-standing service to the game.
Clayton Failla
Saturday’s FA Trophy Final marked Clayton Failla’s 630th appearance in domestic football, bringing to a close a remarkable career spanning several of Malta’s top clubs.
The experienced left-back began his football journey with Żabbar St Patrick before moving to Hibernians. He later featured for Sliema Wanderers and returned to Hibernians for a successful six-year spell. Failla also represented Floriana, Birkirkara and Ħamrun Spartans before enjoying a productive period with Mosta. He concluded his career with Gżira United, making his final appearance in the Meridianbet FA Trophy Final.
Throughout his distinguished career, Failla won three Premier League titles, four FA Trophies and three Super Cups.
On the international stage, he earned 58 caps for Malta and scored twice for the national team.
Steve Borg
Steve Borg also brought the curtain down on an illustrious domestic career, making his 487th appearance in Maltese football during the FA Trophy Final, where he ended on a high by lifting the trophy.
Widely admired for his leadership, determination and commitment, Borg built a successful career both locally and abroad. He started at Mosta before joining Valletta in 2008, where he established himself as one of the country’s leading defenders.
After seven years with the Lilywhites, Borg spent a season in Cyprus with Aris Limassol before returning to Valletta. He later featured for Gżira United and enjoyed a successful spell with Ħamrun Spartans before returning to Valletta for the final chapter of his career.
Borg’s impressive honours list includes eight Premier League titles, four FA Trophies, eight Super Cups, the Anniversary Cup and the Jubilee Cup.
At international level, he made 82 appearances for Malta, scoring three goals. His final cap came against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2025.
The Malta FA thanked both players for their exceptional contribution to Maltese football and their lasting legacy in the local game.
