As one of the three host nations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexico will once again carry the hopes of a football mad nation into the biggest tournament in world football. Alongside United States and Canada, Mexico will welcome the world to a competition set to be the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams for the first time.

Mexico have a proud tradition at the World Cup and will become the first country ever to host the tournament on three occasions, having previously staged the competitions in 1970 and 1986. On both occasions, El Tri reached the quarter-finals, which remains their best performance in the tournament.

Mexico’s World Cup History

Mexico were one of the original participants at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 in Uruguay. Since then, they have become one of the most consistent nations in international football, qualifying for 18 World Cups, including the upcoming 2026 edition.

Over the decades, Mexico have produced memorable moments and legendary players. Their finest World Cup campaigns came on home soil:

  • 1970 World Cup – Reached the quarter-finals before losing to Italy.
  • 1986 World Cup – Again reached the quarter-finals, narrowly losing on penalties to West Germany.

Mexico have also built a reputation for regularly reaching the knockout stages. Between 1994 and 2018, they advanced from the group stage at seven consecutive World Cups before suffering a disappointing early exit at Qatar 2022.

Among the country’s greatest World Cup stars are Rafael Márquez, Javier Hernández, Luis Hernández and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, whose heroic performances have made him a fan favourite across the globe.

Current Stars Leading Mexico into 2026

Mexico head into the tournament with a blend of experienced leaders and exciting young talent. Manager Javier Aguirre is overseeing the side during his third spell in charge and hopes to guide the team to their best-ever World Cup finish.

Some of Mexico’s key players include:

  • Raúl Jiménez – The experienced striker remains a major attacking threat and one of the team’s most reliable goalscorers.
  • Santiago Giménez – One of Mexico’s brightest modern forwards, expected to play a crucial role in attack.
