Real Betis missed the chance to move six points clear in the race for sixth place in La Liga after surrendering a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw away to Real Sociedad. Despite the setback, the hosts extended their unbeaten league streak to six matches (W2, D4).

After collecting only one league point since lifting the Copa del Rey trophy (D1, L2), Sociedad entered the match knowing they needed a stronger performance in front of their fans. However, it was Betis who started brighter and nearly opened the scoring within the first three minutes, only for Antony to fire directly at goalkeeper Alex Remiro from close range.

The visitors continued to threaten early on, with Antony wasting another good opportunity by dragging his effort wide. Sociedad gradually tried to settle into the game, and Orri Oskarsson tested Alvaro Valles with a close-range strike that was comfortably dealt with.

Betis, showing the confidence that had helped them improve their recent away form in La Liga, increased the pressure before the break. Their persistence paid off when Antony produced a stunning curled finish from 20 yards out, finding the bottom corner to score his 14th goal of the campaign.

Real Betis continued their strong spell after the break and quickly doubled their advantage. Abde Ezzalzouli powered past Jon Martin near the touchline before confidently drilling his effort into the far corner beyond Alex Remiro.

In response, Pellegrino Matarazzo made two substitutions, bringing on Luka Sucic and Pablo Marin in an attempt to spark a comeback. The changes appeared to lift Real Sociedad, who believed they had pulled a goal back just after the hour mark through Jon Gorrotxategi, but the strike was ruled out due to an offside in the build-up.

Refusing to give up, Sociedad kept pushing forward and were eventually rewarded 10 minutes from time. Sergio Gomez delivered an excellent ball into the area, which Orri Oskarsson calmly finished to reduce the deficit and set up a tense ending in San Sebastián.

Momentum had firmly swung in favour of Real Sociedad, and their late pressure earned a dramatic penalty deep into stoppage time after Aitor Ruibal was controversially judged to have handled the ball inside the area.

Captain Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and confidently blasted the spot-kick into the roof of the net, rescuing a deserved point for the home side after an impressive comeback.

The result meant Real Betis were denied what would have been their first away league victory over Basque opposition in nine attempts. Ruibal’s difficult evening also ended on a sour note, as he received a second yellow card late on.
