Valletta Football Club has announced that its proposed Valletta FC Football Campus project has successfully passed the NAO Accounts Parliamentary Committee stage, describing the development as a major milestone in the project’s progress.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the club welcomed the approval, saying the initiative had now moved beyond being solely a football project and had become one of wider national importance within Malta’s sporting development strategy.

The club highlighted that the project received unanimous backing from both Government and Opposition members on the committee, arguing that the proposal has gained recognition across political lines.

This follows Prime Minister Robert Abela’s announcement earlier this year that Government would propose the allocation of a site in Pembroke for the campus, a position later publicly supported by Opposition Leader Alex Borg.

Valletta FC said such bipartisan support provides the stability needed for a project intended to have long-term impact.

The proposed campus is being presented as a modern football hub focused on youth development, education, wellbeing and sport. According to the club, the facility would be the first of its kind in Malta and could create opportunities in football, health, rehabilitation, sports science, education and sports management.

Club president Claudio Grech welcomed the latest step forward.

“Today’s unanimous support at committee stage sends a clear message that this project is in the national interest and rises above political considerations,” Grech said.

“For Valletta FC, this is an important step after decades of uncertainty. More importantly, it is about creating a lasting legacy for future generations and providing youths, children and the wider community with the infrastructure they deserve.”

The club also thanked committee chairman Ian Borg, Minister Clifton Grima and the MPs who participated in the committee process.

Questions Still Remain

Despite the positive tone surrounding the announcement, the project is still likely to face scrutiny in the months ahead.

Residents and local stakeholders in Pembroke may raise concerns over land use, traffic generation, environmental impact and whether public land should be allocated to a private football club project, regardless of any wider sporting benefits.

Others may question whether the promised economic and social benefits can realistically be delivered, or whether similar investment should instead be spread across multiple grassroots clubs and community facilities rather than focused on one major development.

There may also be calls for greater transparency regarding financing, governance structures and long-term operational sustainability before the project proceeds further.

Valletta FC said it will continue discussions with all stakeholders, including the local community and Pembroke Local Council, as the proposal moves into its next phases.
