Malta FA welcomes new legal framework allowing clubs to operate as Sports Companies

The Malta Football Association has welcomed the publication of Legal Notice 91 of 2026, a landmark development enabling sports clubs in Malta to operate as sports companies through a dedicated commercial vehicle. The move is expected to inject much-needed financial resources into clubs, enhance long-term stability, and allow them to compete more effectively with their international counterparts.
This legislative milestone marks the culmination of extensive collaboration between a range of stakeholders, both within and outside the football community. The Malta FA expressed its appreciation to all parties involved, particularly the relevant government ministries that supported and endorsed the proposal.
Negotiations and discussions on behalf of the Malta FA were led by Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris, while the Malta Premier League (MPL) was represented by its Chairperson, Dr Joseph Muscat.
Commenting on the initiative, Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo emphasised the importance of unity among stakeholders in achieving meaningful reform. He noted that this collaboration between the Malta FA and the MPL demonstrates how joint efforts can strengthen the sustainability of football clubs and reduce financial volatility across the sector.
The Malta FA will now move forward with the publication of internal conversion mechanisms to guide clubs through the transition from their existing structures to commercial entities. This process aims to ensure a smooth and efficient shift towards the new model, setting the foundation for a more robust and competitive future for Maltese football.
