Mqabba 2
Kirkop United 0

Mqabba claimed local bragging rights and left Kirkop United looking over their shoulders following a 2-0 victory in a tense derby clash. While Mqabba found themselves mathematically out of the promotion race, they played with the pride typical of this rivalry. For Kirkop, the result compounded the frustration of last weekend’s shock loss to Mellieħa, leaving them desperate for points in the relegation dogfight.

Early Dominance

The hosts signaled their intent just eight minutes in when Jeremy Busuttil rose to meet a free kick, sending a header agonizingly wide. However, Busuttil didn’t have to wait long for redemption. In the 13th minute, he pounced during a goalmouth scramble to poke the ball home and give Mqabba a 1-0 lead.

Mqabba continued to dictate the tempo, nearly doubling their advantage at the 25-minute mark when Luka Mijic delivered a teasing cross to Paolo Zammit, though the latter could only direct his header wide.

Penalty Punch

Kirkop United briefly flickered into life in the 34th minute. Neil Buttigieg found space for a stinging effort, but Mqabba custodian Lydon Moore was equal to the task.

The momentum swung decisively back to the home side just before the break. After Andres Tenorio was hauled down inside the area, the referee pointed to the spot. Luka Mijic stepped up and coolly converted the 38th-minute penalty to make it 2-0.

Professional Finish

The second half saw Mqabba comfortably managing their cushion. They nearly added a third when Melvin Busuttil squared a pass to Tenorio, but the attacker’s shot sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Kirkop struggled to find a way back into the contest, and their fate was sealed five minutes from time. Jeremy Delmar managed to carve out a rare late opening, but his low drive was smothered by Falzon. In the end, it was a straightforward afternoon for Mqabba, while Kirkop United return to the drawing board to fight for their survival.
