David Raya was praised as the world’s top goalkeeper by his Arsenal teammate Kai Havertz after both played key roles in a 1-0 win over Sporting CP in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon.

Raya delivered an outstanding performance at the Estádio José Alvalade, producing several crucial saves to keep Arsenal in the contest during a below-par display. The Spanish goalkeeper tipped Maxi Araújo’s strike onto the crossbar, denied Geny Catamo with a low stop, and later reacted brilliantly to push away another header from the same player late in the match.

Despite struggling for large periods, Arsenal made the most of Raya’s man-of-the-match showing to end a two-game losing streak. Havertz eventually settled the tie in stoppage time, calmly finishing after being set up by fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli, giving the Gunners a valuable advantage ahead of the return leg on April 15.

Raya’s return proved crucial after being rested for the club’s League Cup final defeat to Manchester City and their disappointing FA Cup quarter-final loss to Southampton FC. His deputy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, endured a difficult outing at Wembley, making an error that led to City’s opening goal—highlighting the contrast with Raya’s heroics in Lisbon.

“Unbelievable. I still think he’s underestimated in world football, but for me, over the past two seasons, he’s been the best goalkeeper in the world,” said Kai Havertz about his Arsenal teammate David Raya.

“He’s outstanding. He’s saved us so many times and we’re very happy to have him.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also praised Raya following his seventh Champions League clean sheet of the season.

“At the moment, he’s phenomenal. Since joining us, he’s been exceptional and we’re very fortunate to have him,” Arteta said.

“He had two key moments where he made crucial saves. That’s what the Champions League is about—matches are often decided in both boxes because of the level of quality involved.”

Raya himself pointed to his early save from Maxi Araújo as a defining moment in the match, helping keep Arsenal in the game during a difficult spell.

“I think that was a turning point. It came from a quick transition, and it was a great strike, but I managed to get a touch on it and push it onto the bar. Moments like that can change games,” he said.

“That’s what I’m there for—to help the team in every situation, whether it’s making saves, organizing the defence, or contributing with the ball.

“You have to stay focused at all times, whether you’re involved in the play or not. I’m very pleased with my performance and, of course, with the win.”

Arsenal have faced criticism over their mentality during a recent dip in form.

However, the Premier League leaders are still on track to secure their first league title in 22 years and remain firmly in contention for a maiden UEFA Champions League triumph.

“We fully believe we can win the Champions League,” said David Raya. “We’re taking it one game at a time and focusing on showing what we’re capable of.

“The most important thing is to stay focused on the present, but the belief within the squad is strong.

“We’ve come through two defeats, learned from those experiences, and felt the disappointment that comes with losing.

“Now it’s about using that feeling as motivation—going out there, expressing ourselves, and striving to improve every day. That’s the message we want to carry forward.”
