On Wednesday night, Liverpool are set to face what is arguably their most significant match of the 2025/26 season so far, as they travel to the Parc des Princes to take on Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ligue 1 side produced a dominant performance in the Round of 16, sweeping aside Chelsea with an 8-2 aggregate victory. That result raised serious questions about Liam Rosenior’s suitability for the role and highlighted PSG’s strength on the European stage.

Pressure on Arne Slot is also beginning to mount following a disappointing campaign so far. Another heavy defeat against one of the continent’s most dynamic and attacking teams could significantly increase scrutiny on the Dutch manager and potentially put his future at Liverpool in doubt.

Liverpool have struggled for consistency in recent matches, losing 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and suffering a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup. Those results, coming shortly after their Champions League Round of 16 win over Galatasaray S.K., have made this upcoming two-legged tie even more critical for the Reds.

On the other hand, following their win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Paris Saint-Germain have maintained their momentum with convincing victories against OGC Nice (4-0) and Toulouse FC (3-1). Even if the first-leg outcome against Liverpool does not fully go their way, the postponement of their domestic league fixture between the two legs—granted by the French authorities—offers them extra preparation time.

This adjustment in scheduling gives PSG an optimal chance to head to Anfield in strong condition, aiming to secure a win and book their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the second year running.

Despite Liverpool’s inconsistent form under Arne Slot, Luis Enrique is expected to remain cautious and avoid any sense of complacency. The Spaniard will also be aware of a recent trend in the competition: the reigning Champions League holders have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in four of the last five seasons, with Real Madrid in the 2022/23 campaign being the lone exception.

With both sides having recorded three wins each in their previous Champions League meetings, the fixture appears more balanced than some may suggest, indicating that the tie could be far more competitive than a one-sided encounter.

Indeed, although Paris Saint-Germain came out on top in last season’s Round of 16 tie, they needed penalties to secure progression. That said, there is an understanding that Liverpool were in stronger form at that time compared to their current level.

It is also notable that, despite that strong version of Liverpool, they registered only four shots across the two legs, while PSG managed 18 attempts, highlighting the French side’s control over the tie.

PSG’s impressive recent record against English opposition further underlines their confidence in such matchups. Since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, they have eliminated Premier League sides including Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal in knockout competitions.

In addition, they recorded a 5-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and drew 1-1 with Newcastle United during this season’s league phase. This run gives them a six-match unbeaten streak against English clubs, consisting of five wins and one draw, reinforcing their strong track record against Premier League opposition.

A run of seven consecutive knockout matches unbeaten against all opponents in the UEFA Champions League means that another draw or victory for Paris Saint-Germain would see them equal the longest such streak ever recorded by a French club. That record is currently held by Olympique Lyonnais, set between April 2004 and March 2006.

Arne Slot will be determined to avoid what would be a disappointing 16th defeat across all competitions this season, although recent results suggest a challenging period for Liverpool. Since the start of March, they have recorded four losses, one draw, and just two wins.

Players such as Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are expected to play pivotal roles. Liverpool may look to replicate the approach that brought success in their away win over Inter Milan, using that performance as a template to avoid the tie slipping away before the second leg.

Wirtz and Szoboszlai, in particular, will be key to Liverpool’s hopes of causing an upset, with Wirtz’s creativity standing out—his 27 chances created in this season’s Champions League represent the highest recorded by a player from an English club in their first nine appearances in the competition.

The Hungarian midfielder has been Liverpool’s standout performer in this season’s UEFA Champions League, leading the team with five goals, four assists, and 69 possession recoveries. With the squad experiencing a dip in form recently, his creativity and work rate will be crucial if Liverpool are to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.

If the visitors can start strongly and impose themselves, opportunities should arise. While Paris Saint-Germain are known for their attacking flair, they have conceded two goals in four of their last six Champions League matches. In contrast, Liverpool have kept clean sheets in four of their last six outings in the competition, suggesting that defensive solidity could play an important role in deciding the outcome of the tie.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could prove a major threat. He has registered 11 goal contributions in 11 UEFA Champions League appearances this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists. That level of output matches Kylian Mbappé’s tally from the 2020/21 campaign, while only Ousmane Dembélé has surpassed it in recent seasons, recording 14 contributions in 15 matches last year.

To further highlight the scale of the challenge facing Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain have been the most prolific and dominant side in this season’s competition across several key metrics. They lead the way for goals scored (34), total shots (241), shots on target (90), passes attempted (7,971), and overall pass completion rate (91%).

These numbers underline both their attacking firepower and control in possession, suggesting that Liverpool will need to be highly disciplined and efficient if they are to contain PSG’s offensive threat and remain competitive in the tie.
