Vedat Muriqi’s late strike had major consequences at both ends of the LaLiga table, as Mallorca’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid lifted them out of the relegation zone, while Los Blancos missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Barcelona.

Real Madrid dominated possession but were frustrated by their hosts during the opening 15 minutes.

That appeared to change when Antonio Rüdiger played a ball over the top to release Kylian Mbappé, but Mallorca quickly recovered defensively to block the resulting effort. Mbappé then delivered a cross to Manuel Ángel, whose header was comfortably gathered by Leo Román.

Kylian Mbappé continued to pose a threat, first latching onto a well-weighted pass from Arda Güler and forcing a sharp save from Leo Román with his foot. He then created space to curl another attempt toward goal, but the Mallorca goalkeeper was again equal to the effort.

As the half-hour mark passed, the score remained level, and Román was once more called into action shortly after. A lofted cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold was met by a cushioned volley from Güler, but the goalkeeper stood firm to keep the ball out.

Real Madrid were made to pay for their missed opportunities in the 42nd minute. Pablo Maffeo found space on the right flank and delivered a cross into the box for Manu Morlanes, who allowed the ball to drop before calmly guiding it past Andriy Lunin with Mallorca’s first shot on target.

With another Kylian Mbappé effort denied by Mallorca’s goalkeeper representing Real Madrid’s main attacking threat in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Álvaro Arbeloa introduced Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior in an attempt to change the game.

However, neither substitute made an immediate impact as Mallorca remained compact, defending deep and looking to strike on the counter. Bellingham was involved in a sustained attacking move, but it ended with Aurélien Tchouaméni sending a late effort off target with 12 minutes remaining.

Shortly after, Éder Militão wasted a header from a set piece, though he made amends in the 88th minute by rising highest to meet a corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold and head home, seemingly rescuing Real Madrid.

That, however, was not the end of the drama. As injury time began, Mallorca pushed forward once more under Martín Demichelis. Mateo Joseph found Vedat Muriqi, who unleashed a powerful finish into the roof of the net to score the decisive winner.

It marks only Mallorca’s second win in their last eight matches, and their first victory this season against a side starting the round in the top seven.

For Real Madrid, the defeat ends a five-match winning streak in all competitions and leaves them in danger of slipping as many as seven points behind in the title race by the end of the weekend.
