Koundé and Baldé miss Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Newcastle

Barcelona will be without defenders Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde for their Champions League last-16 tie against Newcastle United F.C. after both were diagnosed with hamstring injuries on Wednesday.
The pair were forced off during Barcelona’s 3-0 Copa del Rey semi-final win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, though the Catalans were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate.
“The recovery process for Balde is expected to take around four weeks,” Barcelona confirmed in a statement, while the club did not specify Koundé’s expected absence. Spanish media suggest the 27-year-old French international is likely to be sidelined for a similar period.
In addition to the Champions League fixtures, both defenders will miss LaLiga games against Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla FC, and Rayo Vallecano.
Barcelona are already without midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is also sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Koundé’s injury puts him in doubt for France’s upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Colombia in the United States at the end of March, part of the build-up to this summer’s World Cup. Balde, meanwhile, is a Spain international but has largely remained behind Marc Cucurella and Alex Grimaldo in coach Luis de la Fuente’s pecking order.
