Why Bruno Guimarães could be the ideal successor to Casemiro at Manchester United

In late January, Casemiro confirmed that this season would be his last at Manchester United, with the Brazilian set to depart once his contract expires. While he has been linked to the Saudi Pro League, he has maintained his role in the Red Devils squad and will leave on his own terms.
The Right Time for Casemiro to Step Aside
At 34, the timing seems appropriate for Casemiro to step aside—but he can do so with his head held high. Since joining United in the summer of 2022, he has established himself as one of the club’s most important players.
His experience and influence have been evident, and his output impressive for a defensive midfielder: 22 goals and 13 assists during his time at United. Only Marcus Rashford (45G, 17A), Bruno Fernandes (55G, 58A), Rasmus Hojlund (26G, 4A), and Alejandro Garnacho (26G, 19A) have recorded more contributions in the same period.
Discipline and Consistency
As players age, timing can be slightly off, and Casemiro’s 35 yellow cards and three red cards across all competitions—both the highest in the squad since his arrival—reflect this. Yet, in his defensive role, putting himself about is expected.
In terms of appearances, Casemiro has been remarkably consistent: 152 matches (130 starts), totaling 11,205 minutes. Only Diogo Dalot (173 matches, 160 starts, 14,268 minutes) and Bruno Fernandes (191 matches, 186 starts, 16,682 minutes) have logged more.
Passing, Duels, and Defensive Attributes
Casemiro’s passing has been a standout feature. With 2,088 passes into the final third—only Bruno Fernandes surpassing him at 4,735—and 2,721 forward passes, his range is vital to United’s play. His 81% pass completion, 147 chances created, 1,593 one-on-one duels attempted (winning 879 for 55.2%), 444 aerial duels, and 450 tackles (winning 260) underscore his all-around quality.
The Brazilian has reportedly recommended his international teammate, Bruno Guimarães, as a potential replacement.
Bruno Guimarães: Newcastle’s Key Man
The 28-year-old joined Newcastle United six months before Casemiro’s move to Manchester, immediately becoming central to the team. Known for his relentless work ethic and willingness to engage in physical battles, Guimarães has earned the adoration of the St. James’ Park faithful.
Statistically, he compares favorably to Casemiro: 31 goals and 32 assists, 172 appearances (159 starts), 14,311 minutes played, and an 84.5% pass completion rate from 8,701 passes. He has attempted 2,033 one-on-one duels, winning 1,100, with 1,003 ball recoveries—leading Newcastle across these metrics.
While aerial ability is less pronounced—77 wins from 179 duels—he compensates with 370 tackles attempted and 220 won. His competitive style is disciplined: 44 yellow cards but no reds.
Can Manchester United Afford Him?
Guimarães would be an ideal successor to Casemiro, bringing defensive solidity, passing range, and leadership. However, whether Manchester United can meet Newcastle’s valuation for their captain remains uncertain.
All things considered, the Brazilian midfielder represents a ready-made solution for the Red Devils as they prepare for life after Casemiro.
