Galatasaray SK reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 12 years despite a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat on the night, as a 7-5 aggregate loss ended the European campaign of 10-man Juventus.

Trailing by three goals from the first leg, the Bianconeri flew out of the blocks at the Allianz Stadium, knowing only an aggressive start would keep their hopes alive. The contest burst into life immediately, with chances at both ends inside the opening minutes.

After just two minutes, Davinson Sánchez powered a close-range header goalwards, forcing Mattia Perin into a sharp save to prevent the Turkish champions from effectively ending the tie. Juve responded almost instantly, but Federico Gatti headed over from inside the box when well placed.

Teun Koopmeiners then steered another promising header off target before Perin produced an excellent stop to deny Victor Osimhen as the end-to-end pattern continued.

Kenan Yıldız came close around the half-hour mark with a deflected strike, while Uğurcan Çakır was called upon to make a superb save to preserve Galatasaray’s aggregate cushion.

The breakthrough arrived late in the first half when Khéphren Thuram was felled in the area by Lucas Torreira. Captain Manuel Locatelli kept his composure from the spot, converting confidently to ignite belief among the home support and set up a gripping second period.

However, the momentum swung wildly just three minutes after the restart. Lloyd Kelly was dismissed for a reckless challenge, reducing Juventus to 10 men and handing Galatasaray a numerical advantage.

Still, Juve refused to fold. Yıldız went agonisingly close before Gatti reacted quickest inside a crowded box to turn the ball home with 20 minutes remaining, cutting the aggregate deficit further and energising the stadium.

With time slipping away, Yıldız struck the post from point-blank range in a moment that seemed to sum up Juve’s night. Yet the pressure finally told in the 82nd minute when Weston McKennie rose to nod in from close range, levelling the tie on aggregate and forcing extra time in remarkable fashion.

Fatigue began to show in the additional period, but chances still came. McKennie, outstanding throughout, unselfishly squared for substitute Edon Zhegrova, who somehow fired wide with the goal gaping — a miss that proved pivotal.

On the stroke of half-time in extra time, Osimhen found space in the area and drilled a low effort through Perin’s legs for his seventh goal of the competition, stunning the Allianz Stadium and swinging the tie back in Galatasaray’s favour.

Juventus pushed desperately for another response, but the Lions sealed progression late on. A swift counter-attack culminated in Barış Alper Yılmaz finishing clinically to end the contest and spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Galatasaray now await a round-of-16 clash against either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur, while the Old Lady must quickly regroup and turn their attention back to domestic matters following one of the most dramatic eliminations in recent Champions League memory.
