PSG overcome 10-man Monaco to seal hard-fought place in Champions League last 16

Reigning UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain saw off fellow Ligue 1 side AS Monaco to reach the last 16 for a 14th consecutive season, advancing after a tense 2-2 second-leg draw against 10-man opposition at the Parc des Princes.
Trailing from the first leg and needing to overturn a deficit away from home in Europe for the first time in eight attempts, Monaco began with purpose. Inside 10 minutes, Maghnes Akliouche danced into the box and slipped the ball towards Mamadou Coulibaly, but the winger failed to control the bouncing pass and blazed over from close range.
Thilo Kehrer then glanced a header wide as the visitors threatened to repeat their fast start from the reverse fixture. PSG, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm in the opening half-hour, their best moment arriving when Bradley Barcola crashed a fierce effort against the crossbar from a tight angle.
Monaco’s pressure told just before the break. Caio Henrique found space down the left and delivered a teasing cross that Coulibaly helped on into the path of Akliouche, who calmly guided his finish beyond Matvey Safonov and in off the post to level the tie on aggregate.
Yet, as in the first leg, the contest turned sharply after the interval. Coulibaly, instrumental in Monaco’s opener, was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Achraf Hakimi, reducing the visitors to 10 men and swinging the momentum decisively.
PSG capitalised almost immediately. Désiré Doué was afforded too much freedom along the byline and squared for Marquinhos to convert from close range. Moments later, Hakimi surged into acres of space and unleashed a powerful strike that Philipp Köhn could only parry into the path of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who made no mistake with the rebound.
At 2-1 on the night, PSG appeared in full control. However, Monaco refused to fold. Deep into stoppage time, Simon Adingra’s cross dropped kindly for Jordan Teze, and the Dutch defender slotted past Safonov to restore parity on the evening.
There was insufficient time for a dramatic third, though, and Monaco’s European adventure came to an end despite their late push.
For PSG, progression to the round of 16 extends a remarkable streak of consistency in Europe’s premier competition. But having been forced to come from behind against 10 men across both legs, questions linger over whether they can truly mount a convincing defence of their continental crown.
