Real Madrid will be without star forward Kylian Mbappé for the second leg of their Champions League playoff against Benfica, after the Frenchman was ruled out with a knee injury. The 27-year-old was not included in the squad for Wednesday’s clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Mbappé has been managing a knee problem that kept him out of several games in December and January, including Real’s recent LaLiga fixture against Real Sociedad. Despite his absence, he remains the club’s top scorer this season with 38 goals—23 in LaLiga and 13 in the Champions League.

For the match against Benfica, Real listed only Vinicius Jr, Gonzalo García, Brahim Diaz, and 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono as forwards.

Real Madrid head into the second leg leading 1-0 on aggregate, thanks to a second-half winner from Vinicius in the first leg—a match overshadowed by a racism controversy. Vinicius alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed a racist slur at him. UEFA provisionally suspended Prestianni for one game, though the Argentine winger traveled with Benfica after the suspension was appealed.

Real will also be without midfielder Jude Bellingham, sidelined with a hamstring injury, and forward Rodrygo, who is serving a two-match ban for insulting a match official during a 4-2 defeat to Benfica in the group stage.
