Victor Wembanyama delivered a defensive masterclass as the San Antonio Spurs powered past the Detroit Pistons 114–103 on Monday in a bruising showdown between the NBA’s two hottest teams.

Second in the Western Conference entering the night, San Antonio were made to work for a ninth consecutive victory by the East-leading Pistons, who arrived on a five-game winning streak of their own.

Defence set the tone in the first meeting between the sides this season, with the 7-foot-5 Wembanyama swatting away six shots and hauling in 17 rebounds. His rim protection and control on the glass repeatedly sparked transition opportunities as the Spurs pulled away in the closing stages.

While Detroit endured spells of sloppy shooting, Devin Vassell spearheaded San Antonio’s offence, pouring in 28 points — including seven three-pointers, matching the Pistons’ total from beyond the arc.

“They tried to impose their will. We tried to get out in transition, keep getting stops, find an open man. That’s what we did,” Vassell said.

The Spurs surged into an early 12-point lead, but the Pistons responded to edge ahead by the end of the first quarter, setting the stage for a fiercely contested encounter. Late in the second, tensions flared when Cade Cunningham knocked Stephon Castle to the floor, prompting a reaction from Keldon Johnson that resulted in a technical foul.

Detroit’s physical defence made life difficult for Wembanyama early on, limiting his offensive rhythm. San Antonio nonetheless carried a narrow advantage into halftime before the contest tightened further in the third quarter. During one frantic sequence, Spurs guard Dylan Harper was sent crashing off the court and into a cameraman.

As the intensity rose, Wembanyama grew into the game, producing a series of spectacular blocks and commanding rebounds that ignited a decisive run. The Spurs opened up a 15-point cushion in the fourth quarter, seizing control when it mattered most.

Jalen Duren led a late Pistons rally with 25 points, but the comeback ultimately fell short as San Antonio closed out the win. Wembanyama finished with 21 points, while Julian Champagnie added 17.

“We all play for each other. We’re all super humble. All we want to do is win,” Vassell added.

The victory lifts the Spurs to 41–16, keeping them within striking distance of the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, who lead the West at 44–14.
