The Futsal Malta Association (FMA) has welcomed the Malta Football Association’s decision to include a dedicated futsal arena within the National Stadium Regeneration Masterplan, marking a major milestone in a campaign that dates back more than a decade.

Since its foundation in 2011, the FMA has worked closely with national authorities and the MFA to address the chronic shortage of suitable indoor facilities, with most existing courts heavily booked for other sports. As early as 2012, the association had begun advocating for purpose-built infrastructure, presenting detailed proposals, conceptual designs and cost projections under successive administrations.

Although earlier initiatives stalled for a variety of reasons, the association maintained steady pressure, keeping the project on the national sporting agenda. This persistence bore political recognition when both major parties included a futsal arena in their 2022 electoral manifestos.

The MFA’s wider vision to regenerate the Ta’ Qali National Stadium complex has now provided a concrete pathway for the project to move forward, with the planned arena set to form part of an integrated sports hub that strengthens the link between football and futsal.

The National Stadium Regeneration Committee, chaired by MFA Vice-President Dr Matthew Paris, has identified the futsal facility as one of its key deliverables. FMA president Mark Borg is also a member of the committee and is working with the masterplanning and design team to translate the long-standing vision into a practical, modern venue for the sport.

For the futsal community, the development represents not only improved infrastructure but also a platform for growth, higher standards of competition and increased opportunities for players at all levels.
