Jaren Jackson Jr., recently acquired by the Utah Jazz in a trade with Memphis Grizzlies last week, will undergo surgery to remove a growth on his left knee, the club announced Thursday.

The forward, who is averaging 19.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season, is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign following the procedure, scheduled during the upcoming NBA All-Star break.

An MRI conducted after Jackson’s post-trade physical revealed a localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) growth — a sizable tumor that can damage the joint if not removed. The decision for surgery was made collaboratively by Jackson, his agent, the Jazz, and medical experts, with the operation set to take place in the coming days.

The 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Jazz, though no specific timetable for his return has been provided.

A two-time NBA All-Star, Jackson is in his eighth season and holds career averages of 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and 1.5 assists per game.

Jackson, 26, joined Utah from Memphis in a February 3 deal that involved eight players and three first-round NBA Draft picks heading to the Grizzlies. He scored 22 points in his Jazz debut last Saturday during a 120-117 loss at Orlando Magic.

At 18-37, the Jazz currently sit 13th in the Western Conference.
