Ghajnsielem FC overcome Wanderers to claim top spot in Gozo First Division
Ghajnsielem FC moved to the summit of the GFA BOV Gozo Football League 1st Division standings following a hard-fought 4-2 victory over SK Victoria Wanderers FC at the Gozo Stadium on Friday evening.
The Blackshits got off to a flying start, establishing a two-goal cushion within the first half-hour. Alberto Xuereb opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by a clinical strike from Ewertton Jose Spirandelli Costa (Tom Tom) in the 27th minute.
The Wanderers, however, refused to go down without a fight and staged a dramatic comeback early in the second half. Ender Duvan Alvarez Vielma reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 59th minute, and just two minutes later, Emerson Zammit found the net to level the score at 2-2.
Ghajnsielem’s response to the setback was immediate and decisive. Deison Cuero restored their lead in the 65th minute, and Tom Tom secured his second goal of the night in the 82nd minute to seal the win and three vital points. The match was officiated by referee Andrea Naudi.
With this result, Ghajnsielem move into first place with 21 points, leapfrogging Kercem Ajax, though the title race remains incredibly tight with only two points separating the top three teams.
