Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-breaking Grand Slam title continued in extraordinary fashion after fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire injured from their Australian Open quarter-final on Wednesday, despite holding a commanding two-set lead.

Musetti had been in control at 6-4, 6-3, 3-1 when he was unable to continue, allowing Djokovic to escape defeat at his most successful major venue. The 10-time Melbourne champion remains on course for a standalone 25th Grand Slam title, which would move him ahead of Margaret Court.

“I don’t know what to say, except that I feel really sorry for him,” Djokovic said after the match. “He was the better player. I was on my way home tonight.

“To be two sets up in a Grand Slam quarter-final and in full control, and then have to retire, it’s so unfortunate. I wish him a speedy recovery. He should have won today, no doubt.”

The 38-year-old returned to competition after a lengthy break following Jakub Mensik’s fourth-round withdrawal, and initially looked sharp. He mixed his game well and secured an early break, suggesting he was ready for another deep run.

However, a series of loose points allowed Musetti to regain control. The Italian levelled at 2-2 before taking charge of the opening set, finishing strongly on serve. His variety and attacking intent continued to trouble Djokovic in the second set.

“My strategy worked at the start and then it changed completely,” Djokovic admitted. “He makes you play even when you think the point is over. His variety is incredible.

“I wasn’t feeling the ball in the first two sets, but that’s also because of his quality. I’m extremely lucky to get through.”

Musetti maintained his momentum in the second set, breaking early and regaining his advantage after a brief setback. He soon moved two sets clear, leaving Djokovic struggling to find answers.

Early in the third set, Djokovic received treatment for a foot blister and managed to edge ahead 2-1. Shortly afterwards, Musetti called for medical assistance due to what appeared to be a thigh problem.

Although the 23-year-old attempted to continue, his movement was clearly restricted. After one more game, he decided he could not go on, prompting gasps from the crowd at Rod Laver Arena.

The retirement handed Djokovic his 103rd Australian Open match victory, surpassing Roger Federer’s record at the tournament.

Djokovic will now face the winner of the quarter-final between defending champion Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton.

“I’m going to double my prayers tonight and be grateful for this opportunity,” he said. “I wasn’t happy with my performance today, but hopefully in a couple of days I can be at my best. That’s what will be needed.”
