Medvedev shrugs off early scare to reach third round in Melbourne

Three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev came through an early test on Wednesday to book his place in the third round of the Australian Open.
The Russian 11th seed kept his composure under the Melbourne sun to defeat France’s Quentin Halys 6–7(9), 6–3, 6–4, 6–2 in a match lasting just over three hours. Medvedev will next face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan at Melbourne Park.
“It was a very tough match, and I’m happy I managed to fight through it,” Medvedev said after sealing victory with his 14th ace. “I was able to play some good tennis to win. I still can’t quite get used to the court and feel I’m missing a bit of power in my shots, but I’m definitely playing better and feeling good.”
The opening set was a grueling affair, lasting 68 minutes and culminating in a marathon tiebreak. World No. 83 Halys eventually edged it on the 20th point, before immediately putting pressure on Medvedev’s serve at the start of the second set.
Halys broke early, and Medvedev—who has spoken about trying to stay more “positive” on court—briefly showed signs of frustration. However, the 29-year-old quickly regrouped, breaking back straight away with a superb two-handed backhand down the line.
The former world No. 1 then seized control, winning three consecutive games to move 3–2 ahead and firmly swing the momentum in his favor. The 2021 US Open champion claimed the second and third sets with increasing authority, as Halys began to fade, before racing through the fourth to close out the match.
Medvedev, who finished runner-up in Melbourne in 2021, 2022 and 2024, arrived at the tournament seeking to rebuild confidence after a difficult year at the Grand Slams. He warmed up for the event by lifting the Brisbane International title.
“I need to rebuild my confidence step by step,” Medvedev admitted. “I’m just trying to enjoy it and play some good tennis.”
