Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has been handed a two-match suspension by Serie A following his dismissal during his side’s 2-2 draw with league leaders Inter Milan.

Conte was sent off midway through the second half after angrily protesting a penalty decision awarded to Inter. The league’s disciplinary committee confirmed that the Napoli boss was punished for directing insults at the match officials.

In a statement, the committee detailed Conte’s conduct following the red card: “After his sending-off, he kicked a ball placed at the edge of the pitch and approached the fourth official in an intimidating manner, repeating insulting remarks.”

As a result, the former Italy manager will be absent from the touchline for Napoli’s rescheduled match against Parma on Wednesday, as well as Saturday’s home fixture against Sassuolo.

Conte, who guided Napoli to the Serie A title in his first season in charge last May, now faces a brief spell away from the dugout at a crucial point in the campaign. Napoli currently sit third in the standings on 39 points, four behind Inter, whom they narrowly pipped to the Scudetto last season.
