Dortmund hit Bremen for three to strengthen grip on second

Borussia Dortmund maintained their unbeaten home record in the Bundesliga this season and bounced back to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen, extending the visitors’ winless run to six matches (D2, L4).
A weekend postponement meant Bremen enjoyed an extended winter break, and they appeared sharper early on. Justin Njinmah tested Gregor Kobel inside the opening minutes, while Marco Grüll curled a dipping effort from distance just over the crossbar.
Dortmund soon found their rhythm, however, and took the lead in the 11th minute. After Carney Chukwuemeka and Fábio Silva combined neatly to force a corner, Julian Ryerson delivered a superb cross that Nico Schlotterbeck met with a powerful header to open the scoring.
As had been the case in their six-goal thriller away at Frankfurt on Friday, Dortmund continued to allow openings at the back. Njinmah again beat the offside trap shortly afterwards, but Kobel produced an excellent save to preserve the hosts’ advantage.
That effort in the 18th minute proved to be the last shot on target for some time. The game settled into a quieter spell until Marcel Sabitzer tried his luck from distance, forcing Bremen goalkeeper Mio Nagata into a comfortable save as the first half drifted to a close. Dortmund were content to head into the break with a narrow lead, having led 1-0 at half-time in four of their previous five home league wins.
Bremen started the second half positively, with Kobel alert at his near post to deny Romano Schmid. Yet once again, the visitors struggled to sustain that pressure. Ten minutes after the restart, Dortmund went close to doubling their lead when Silva slipped Maximilian Beier through on goal, but Nagata reacted sharply, and neither attacker could convert the rebound.
Sabitzer then fired a first-time effort narrowly over the bar from 20 yards, as Dortmund pushed to put the game to bed. Their persistence was rewarded with 15 minutes remaining, when Bremen afforded Sabitzer too much space at the edge of the area, allowing the Austrian to strike a bouncing ball cleanly into the bottom corner.
Dortmund had won their previous two home matches by a 2-0 scoreline, but they added a third late on to complete a dominant display. Jobe Bellingham blocked Amos Pieper’s attempted clearance inside the box, and Serhou Guirassy was on hand to collect the loose ball and calmly roll it past Nagata.
The result marks Dortmund’s 10th league win of the season, with nine of those victories coming via clean sheets, as they strengthen their hold on second place. Bremen, meanwhile, have now lost all four away matches this season against teams that began the round inside the top eight, each by a margin of at least two goals.
