Athleta edge Luxol in overtime as Starlites stay perfect in BOV National Men League


Matchweek 7 of the BOV National Men League delivered drama, dominant performances and a clearer picture at the top of the standings as the race for playoff positions continued to intensify.
Athleta AtoZ enjoyed a dream start to the new calendar year, emerging victorious from an overtime thriller against Luxol Sherries Estates at the Pavilion. In a tightly contested encounter, Athleta held their nerve in the extra period to secure a 76–73 win. Duane Goodman Jr was the driving force behind the victory, pouring in 31 points, while Ebelashvili added a valuable 16-point contribution. Despite the loss, Luxol were buoyed by an outstanding debut from Xavier Brewer, who produced a huge double-double with 39 points and 16 rebounds. Stefan Cappello also impressed for the Violets, finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Hibernians produced the most emphatic result of the weekend, sweeping aside Valletta Dream 150–42 in a one-sided contest. The Paolites showcased their depth with a strong rotation throughout the game, as six players finished in double figures. Deonte Jackson and Ayomide Ajiboye led the scoring charge, while Valletta used the encounter to introduce several new faces following the turn of the year.
League leaders Starlites Revive were made to work hard for their seventh consecutive victory, eventually pulling clear in the closing minutes to defeat The Plaza Depiro 87–70. Starlites once again displayed their balance and consistency, with Jallow, Fee and Iturmendi all registering double-doubles, while Scerri chipped in with a solid 17-point performance. Depiro stayed competitive for long stretches, relying on Bozovic, Cornelius and Reddish for scoring.
Following Matchweek 7, two clubs have begun to separate themselves at the top of the table. Starlites Revive remain the only unbeaten side in the league with a perfect 7–0 record, closely followed by Hibernians on 6–1. Despite their defeat, The Plaza Depiro hold on to third place with a 3–4 record. Athleta AtoZ and Luxol Sherries Estates are now level on 2–5, locked in a tight battle for fourth place, while Valletta Dream sit sixth on 1–6, just one point adrift as the playoff race remains wide open.
