BOV Challenge League: Zurrieq edge Vittoriosa as Balzan cruise past Swieqi in Centenary Stadium Double header

Sunday’s BOV Challenge League action at the Centenary Stadium saw Zurrieq grind out a narrow win over Vittoriosa Stars, while Balzan produced a dominant display to brush aside Swieqi United and strengthen their push toward the upper end of the table.
Vittoriosa Stars D’Orsini 0–1 Zurrieq
In the early kick-off, Zurrieq claimed a valuable three points with a hard-fought 1–0 victory against Vittoriosa Stars. Both teams came into the match desperate for a win after a slow start to the season, but it was Zurrieq who made the decisive breakthrough midway through the first half.
After a quiet opening spell, Gianluca Zammit unlocked the Vittoriosa defence with a precise through ball that sent Jamie Zerafa clean through on goal. Zerafa made no mistake, drilling a low shot past Edward Gatt to put Zurrieq in front after 27 minutes.
Zurrieq almost doubled their advantage moments later when Zammit’s fierce strike cannoned off the post. From then on, the visitors controlled the game comfortably, restricting Vittoriosa to few meaningful attacks.
Despite a slight improvement from Vittoriosa after the break, they failed to trouble Jean Paul Grima in the Zurrieq goal, as Parisi’s side held firm to claim a well-deserved clean sheet and a crucial win that lifts them up the standings.
Balzan 4–0 Swieqi United
In the day’s second fixture, Balzan delivered a statement performance, dismantling Swieqi United 4–0 to continue their strong run of form. Both sides entered the match on the back of victories, but it was Balzan who imposed themselves early and never looked back.
Just six minutes in, Awosanya Dimeji opened the scoring with a close-range finish past Jean Claude Debattista, setting the tone for the match. Swieqi struggled to respond and were dealt a major blow in first-half stoppage time when Salam Kojo Mawena was sent off for a reckless challenge on Gabriel Chiemeze.
With the man advantage, Balzan dictated play after the interval. They came close to doubling the lead through Luis Gabriel Santos Silva, whose free kick whistled over the bar, before finally sealing the points nine minutes from time when James Scicluna fired home a fine effort.
In stoppage time, Balzan turned on the style. Silva Caetano made it 3–0 with a delicate lob after earlier hitting the post, and Awosanya completed the rout with a brilliant solo goal just before the final whistle — his second of the game.
The result cements Balzan’s place among the early frontrunners, while Swieqi will look to regroup after a difficult afternoon.
