Manchester City head to Madrid for a Champions League showdown that pits mentor against former student, as Pep Guardiola and Xabi Alonso face off as managers for the very first time.

Alonso played under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, and their tactical philosophies — so closely aligned — are expected to collide on Wednesday night. Yet the stakes appear far higher for the Real Madrid coach than for his opposite number.

Alonso already under pressure

Despite being only weeks into the job, Alonso is reportedly at risk of dismissal if City leave the Bernabéu with all three points. A dip in results combined with growing player influence has left the Spanish coach walking a tightrope.

Guardiola, who shares a warm history with Alonso, acknowledged the unique pressure that comes with managing Real Madrid.

“It was an incredible experience being with him. Not just as a manager — we shared many things, families as well,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference.
“But Barcelona and Madrid are the toughest clubs to coach — the pressure and the environment make them uniquely demanding.”

Mbappé remains the key figure

Kylian Mbappé is battling a knee issue but could still be risked due to his importance to the team. He scored all four goals in Madrid’s previous Champions League outing against Olympiacos, reaffirming his role as Alonso’s talisman ahead of Vinícius Júnior.

The French superstar also netted a hat-trick when these sides last met in last season’s knockout playoff, a 3–1 Real victory. Only Lionel Messi has more combined goals and assists against City in the competition than Mbappé, who has seven goals and one assist in seven encounters with the Premier League champions.

His nine goals this season equal the record for most scored by a Real Madrid player in their first five games in a single Champions League campaign — matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s mark from 2013/14 — and comfortably exceeding Erling Haaland’s five.

Haaland hunting more history

City’s star striker will aim to improve on his modest return in this fixture — two goals in five appearances — and add to his extraordinary Champions League tally of 53 games, 54 goals. Haaland also has 20 across all competitions this season, trailing only Mbappé (26) and Harry Kane (28).

The matchup has produced goals historically — only once has it ended scoreless, back in April 2016 — emphasizing just how vital both forwards are to their respective teams.

Real Madrid enter the contest with a remarkable run of 38 consecutive home games with a goal scored in European competition. The last visiting side to keep a clean sheet at the Bernabéu was CSKA Moscow in December 2018. Only two teams have ever enjoyed longer streaks: Real themselves (45) and Juventus (45).

City seek a crucial result

Guardiola’s side haven’t beaten Real Madrid since May 2023 and currently sit outside the automatic qualification places in their group. A positive result is needed to avoid a tense finish to the group stage.

This will be the 15th Champions League meeting between the clubs — more than any other fixture since they first clashed in 2012/13.

City’s form in Europe has stumbled: since November 2024, they have suffered six defeats in 12 Champions League games (W4, D2). Before that stretch, it took 69 matches for them to lose six (W49, D14). Guardiola is also winless in his last four meetings with Real (D2, L2), although he had previously won 13 of 27 encounters during spells at Barcelona and Bayern.

High stakes in Madrid

Both sides have clear motivation: only two more group games remain after this one, and qualification scenarios could become complicated quickly.

City’s confidence in Guardiola isn’t in question — even a loss wouldn’t shake that. Madrid’s patience is another matter entirely. Alonso may need a statement performance simply to strengthen his grip on the job.

For the hosts, Mbappé cannot shoulder the burden alone. With multiple defensive injuries, Real need leadership from Vinícius Júnior, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Fede Valverde and the rest of their core squad if Alonso’s tenure is to remain intact.
