Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is determined to put his side’s recent struggles behind them and close out the year on a high when they face Sevilla on Saturday, as Los Blancos look to maintain pressure on LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Madrid had enjoyed a five-point lead at the top of the table earlier in the season, but a dip in form during November saw their advantage slip away. Three consecutive league draws were followed by a surprise home defeat to Celta Vigo earlier this month, allowing reigning champions Barcelona to open up a four-point lead in the title race.

Although Madrid have shown signs of recovery with two wins in their last three league matches, Alonso—who has come under scrutiny amid the team’s inconsistency—is keen to head into the Christmas break with momentum.

“We want to finish well. It’s been a tough and difficult period,” Alonso told reporters on Friday. “We want to start 2026 in a good way.”

Alonso expects a demanding contest against Sevilla, praising their intensity and technical ability.

“They are a tough opponent. They demand a lot, play many one-on-one situations, and their players compete hard in challenges,” he said. “They’re good on the ball, and we want people to enjoy the game.”

Asked about his relationship with the club’s hierarchy amid high expectations, Alonso insisted it remains strong, despite Madrid’s desire to replicate the success of the 2023/24 season, when they won both LaLiga and the Champions League.

“From the beginning, we’ve had a close relationship built on respect and affection,” he said. “The demands are high. It’s a long journey—there will be good moments and others that are not so good.”

Vinicius drought a matter of time

Madrid’s dip in form has coincided with a goal drought for Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian forward, who netted 22 goals last season, has scored just five times this campaign and has not found the net since October.

The 25-year-old has gone 16 matches without a goal for club or country, though he provided the assist for Rodrygo’s winner in Sunday’s victory over Alaves.

Alonso remains confident that Vinicius will soon rediscover his scoring touch.

“We’ve spoken to Vini and we’re working with him. It’s just a matter of matches,” Alonso said. “He’s been close, and he’ll get there—hopefully tomorrow.”
