Nick Woltemade’s second-half own goal proved decisive as Sunderland edged out Newcastle United 1-0 in a fiercely contested Tyne–Wear derby at the Stadium of Light, extending their unbeaten Premier League run against their rivals to 10 matches (W7, D3).

Sunderland began brightly in the first league derby between the sides since 2015, pressing high and asserting early control, though clear-cut chances were hard to come by despite their promising start.

Opportunities were scarce for much of the opening half, with the match instead defined by physical battles and robust challenges in a typically heated derby atmosphere. One such late tackle from Nordi Mukiele brought a premature end to Dan Burn’s involvement, as the defender was forced off through injury.

Granit Xhaka briefly lifted the home crowd’s anticipation just before the half-hour mark with a long-range attempt, but his effort sailed well over the crossbar, underlining the lack of cutting edge from both teams before the interval.

Both Régis Le Bris and Eddie Howe were left with plenty to ponder at half-time, but Newcastle’s concerns deepened almost immediately after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, Woltemade inadvertently turned Mukiele’s driven cross into his own net, his attempted headed clearance looping beyond the helpless Aaron Ramsdale and dropping in off the underside of the bar to spark jubilant celebrations among the home supporters.

In search of a response, Howe turned to his bench, introducing Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock with over 30 minutes remaining.

The changes brought renewed urgency, as Newcastle began to threaten. Bruno Guimarães tested Robin Roefs with a pair of long-range efforts, while at the other end Wilson Isidor went close to sealing the contest, forcing Ramsdale into a sharp save at his near post.

Sunderland ultimately required no further goals, keeping their composure through a fiery finale to secure a memorable derby victory. The win lifts them up to seventh in the table, opening a four-point gap over their 12th-placed rivals.
