Liverpool are facing a critical crossroads with Ibrahima Konate as the 26-year-old defender’s contract saga continues to drag on, with financial demands threatening to derail his future at Anfield.

The Reds have struggled to replicate the dominance of last season’s Premier League triumph, currently sitting 14 points behind leaders Arsenal despite remaining in Champions League qualification spots. Defensive frailties have been a recurring issue this campaign, with the team already conceding 29 goals compared to just 41 in all of 2025.

While Virgil van Dijk has largely been a reliable presence, Konate has looked unsettled at times—an issue some attribute to ongoing contract negotiations that have stretched over 16 months. Reports suggest the Frenchman’s camp and Liverpool remain far apart on terms, with money the primary sticking point. Konate currently earns £70,000 per week, but he and his advisors are pushing for a significant increase, citing his past performances at Anfield as justification. Though he does not expect parity with van Dijk, who earns £350,000 per week, they believe his contributions warrant a pay rise closer to the top tier of Liverpool’s wage structure.

From the club’s perspective, caution is understandable. While Konate has made more tackles than van Dijk this season (38 vs 16), his success rate of 55.3% is only marginally higher, and he has lost three times as many challenges. Passing statistics also raise concerns: of 1,733 passes, only 571 have been forward, and he has completed just 56 accurate long passes compared to van Dijk’s 133. His attempts at long “launch” passes have also struggled, with only 5 of 30 successful.

Despite these areas of weakness, Konate excels in duels, winning 107 aerial battles from 142 and 176 ground one-on-ones from 254, figures expected of any elite modern centre-back. Liverpool is reportedly willing to offer a wage increase in line with his standing, but not at the level of their top earners—a stance that appears to have frustrated the player and his representatives.

With Konate eligible to leave on a free transfer in June, urgent decisions are needed from both sides. The Reds must weigh the cost of losing a talented defender versus meeting his wage demands, while Konate has to decide whether to stay and risk further scrutiny over inconsistent performances or seek a more lucrative deal elsewhere.

Time is running out, and the next few months will determine whether Liverpool can retain a player who should still be entering the prime of his career.
