Why Chelsea Might Add Julian Alvarez to Their Already Formidable Attack

Why Chelsea Might Consider Adding Julian Alvarez to Their Star-Studded Attack
Despite being contracted to Atletico Madrid until June 2030, Julian Alvarez remains one of the most coveted forwards in world football.
The Argentinian’s rise has been remarkable, beginning at River Plate, flourishing at Manchester City, and now making waves at Los Rojiblancos.
Impressive Numbers
Heading into Argentina’s final international match of the year against Angola, Alvarez has already tallied nine goals and five assists across 18 appearances in 2025/26 for club and country.
Since the 2018/19 season, he has scored 66 goals and contributed 24 assists in 154 league games, often playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland at Manchester City. His numbers improve further when including domestic cups (29G, 17A in 69 games), international club competitions (33G, 14A in 72 games), and international fixtures for Argentina (19G, 7A in 78 games).
Atleti’s £81.5m (plus add-ons) investment in Alvarez has already paid dividends, with the striker adapting quickly to the club’s more physical and demanding style. Whether leading the line, linking with Alexander Sorloth in a big-man/little-man setup, or dovetailing with Antoine Griezmann, Alvarez has impressed consistently.
Chelsea Eye a €150m Move
Interest in Alvarez is growing. Barcelona have long admired the striker, following in the footsteps of compatriot Lionel Messi, but financial constraints make a move to Camp Nou unlikely.
Reports now suggest that Chelsea, fresh off their Club World Cup win, could table a €150m bid next summer. Enzo Fernandez, Alvarez’s international teammate and Chelsea vice-captain, is expected to help persuade the striker to return to the Premier League.
While Atletico may be reluctant to sell, a record-fee offer—roughly £132m—would be hard to ignore, offering funds to strengthen other areas of the squad.
Integrating Alvarez into Chelsea’s Attack
Chelsea already boast eight forwards, including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto, Estevao, Marc Guiu, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, and Tyrique George. Assuming manager Enzo Maresca sticks to a front three, several players would already be sidelined even before Alvarez arrives.
There’s also the question of squad continuity. While Chelsea have been active in the transfer market since the Clearlake takeover, frequent squad upheaval can hinder the development of a settled team capable of competing for domestic and European trophies.
The Right Move?
Alvarez would undeniably strengthen any team with his goals, assists, and creativity. Yet Chelsea already possess players capable of similar roles. Ultimately, the decision will rest with the player himself, who has remained tight-lipped about transfer speculation ahead of a World Cup year.
In football, nothing is ever certain, and there is still time for a deal that satisfies all parties. For now, Alvarez remains one of the brightest attacking talents on the market—and a player Chelsea could seriously consider adding to their roster.
