West Ham United fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester City, ending their run of seven consecutive defeats. More importantly, the result boosted the Hammers’ hopes of staying in the Premier League while dealing a blow to City’s ambitions of winning the title.
Although Pep Guardiola was watching from the stands while serving a touchline suspension, his side quickly took control of possession and applied early pressure on the hosts. Jarrod Bowen was even forced to track back and challenge Rayan Aït‑Nouri inside his own penalty area.
Despite dominating the tempo of the game, City struggled to seriously test Mads Hermansen, as the claret-and-blue defence remained well organised. The closest they came in that spell was a free-kick from Omar Marmoush, which drifted harmlessly wide of the target.
The first shot on target finally arrived in the 31st minute, and it proved decisive for Manchester City. Bernardo Silva latched onto a pass from Omar Marmoush before delicately lifting the ball over Mads Hermansen and into the far corner.
However, West Ham United reacted quickly to falling behind and levelled the score just four minutes later. Konstantinos Mavropanos met a corner delivered by Jarrod Bowen with a powerful header that struck the crossbar and bounced over the line.
Erling Haaland laid the ball across to Antoine Semenyo, presenting him with a chance to restore the lead for Manchester City before halftime, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Soon after the restart, Omar Marmoush pulled a shot wide, and despite their pressure, Guardiola’s side struggled once again to break down the determined West Ham United team managed by Nuno Espírito Santo.
Around the hour mark, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku were brought on, and Cherki quickly created a promising opportunity for Haaland. However, Mads Hermansen produced an excellent save to push the ball wide.
Later, a header from Abdukodir Khusanov and a strike from Doku both flew over the crossbar, while Konstantinos Mavropanos made a crucial sliding block to deny Matheus Nunes.
Haaland then dragged another effort wide before Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders were introduced as further substitutions for the visitors.
However, Manchester City were unable to find a breakthrough. Mads Hermansen produced another excellent moment, getting the slightest touch on Tijjani Reijnders’ free-kick to push it onto the crossbar before later denying Nico O’Reilly with a strong save from a header.
Konstantinos Mavropanos capped off an outstanding performance by bravely blocking a volley from Erling Haaland as well as another effort from O’Reilly, while Marc Guéhi sent a shot over the bar. As a result, City were forced to settle for a second consecutive league draw, leaving their title ambitions under pressure as they remain nine points behind Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand.
The result is far more valuable for West Ham United, who now sit outside the relegation zone and have lost only once in their last seven matches in all competitions.
