Wembley unavailable due to concerts, FA Community Shield shifted to Cardiff


The FA Community Shield will be held at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in August after Wembley Stadium became unavailable due to a series of concerts, the Football Association confirmed on Monday.
Wembley has been booked for multiple performances by Canadian artist The Weeknd during the scheduled period.
The Premier League season is set to begin over the weekend of August 22, with the Community Shield scheduled for August 16.
This will be the first time since 2006 that the traditional curtain-raiser will take place at the home of Welsh rugby.
Welsh Rugby Union chief financial and operating officer Gavin Marshall said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome the FA Community Shield back to Principality Stadium.
“This fixture holds a special place in the stadium’s history, and hosting it again after 20 years is a hugely proud moment for everyone involved.”
The Principality Stadium, which can hold more than 74,000 spectators, previously hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006 while Wembley was undergoing redevelopment.
The move to Cardiff could have commercial consequences, as Wembley’s 90,000-seat capacity and status as the FA’s national stadium offer higher match-day revenue and hospitality opportunities.
Reaction from supporters has been mixed. Some praised the decision, describing Cardiff as “one of the best sporting venues,” while others questioned holding the fixture outside England, citing potential travel and accommodation costs for fans.
