Welbeck’s strong Brighton performances boost his chances of England recall

Danny Welbeck’s resurgence at Brighton has thrust him back into contention for an England recall ahead of the World Cup.
The veteran striker, 35, is enjoying one of the most productive starts of his Premier League career. His form has caught the eye of England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who has been closely monitoring fringe candidates for the national squad.
Welbeck is currently the Premier League’s top-scoring Englishman, with seven goals already this season. Crucially, some of these strikes have come in high-profile matches against Chelsea, Newcastle, and Manchester United, highlighting his ability to deliver on the big stage.
England sources suggest Tuchel has been impressed by Welbeck’s performances, viewing him as a reliable backup to captain Harry Kane. His experience and composure inside the penalty area are seen as valuable assets—qualities that are currently in short supply among England’s striking options.
Despite earning 42 caps and scoring 16 goals for England, injuries have repeatedly disrupted Welbeck’s international career, and he has not featured for the national team since September 2018.
He was overlooked for the latest squad against Serbia and Albania, but Tuchel has reportedly kept him on the radar while Welbeck remained focused on club duties. Sources indicate the striker would welcome a recall, with Jordan Henderson’s recent return to the England fold serving as proof that opportunities can reemerge.
Tuchel has promised to contact every player on England’s extended list to outline what is required for World Cup selection. Welbeck is understood to be among those with a realistic chance of making the squad.
This Sunday, he faces Nottingham Forest, hoping to take another step towards what would be a remarkable comeback to international football and a potential seat on England’s plane to the United States next summer.
