Watkins’ late impact caps Aston Villa’s remarkable turnaround at Chelsea

In a classic game of two halves, Aston Villa fought back to secure a 2–1 Premier League victory over Chelsea, continuing their strong recent record at Stamford Bridge with a third win in their last four visits.
Chelsea started brightly and carved out an early opening just two minutes in, when a delicate Moisés Caicedo pass and a fine touch from Cole Palmer created space, but the forward dragged his shot wide. Villa threatened sporadically on the break through Morgan Rogers, though Benoît Badiashile’s well-timed challenge inside the box snuffed out one promising attack.
The hosts controlled possession and tempo, pressing aggressively and reaching loose balls first. One interception sparked a move that ended with Alejandro Garnacho pulling the ball back for Enzo Fernández, whose effort drifted wide. Caicedo and Palmer then both saw shots blocked by Youri Tielemans, while Emiliano Martínez stayed alert to deny João Pedro with a sharp spread in the 24th minute.
Despite holding firm, Villa suffered a setback when Matty Cash was booked for a challenge on Garnacho, a caution that rules the right-back out of the upcoming clash with Arsenal.
Chelsea eventually made their dominance count in the 37th minute. After Reece James had sent a speculative effort wide, he swung in a corner that João Pedro glanced home with a deft touch to break the deadlock. Palmer forced a save soon after, while John McGinn’s routine free-kick at the other end failed to trouble Robert Sánchez before the interval.
The contest opened up after the restart. Rogers and Emiliano Buendía both went close, either side of a powerful James strike that required an excellent save from Martínez. Garnacho then curled an effort wide as Villa boss Unai Emery responded with a triple substitution around the hour mark.
The changes paid dividends. Ollie Watkins slipped Boubacar Kamara through on goal, only for Sánchez to rush out and block, but Watkins would not be denied for long. His initial shot rebounded off the goalkeeper and back onto the striker before crossing the line to level the score.
Sánchez was soon called into action again to repel a fierce Ian Maatsen effort, while Chelsea countered with three substitutions of their own. Watkins, however, continued to torment the defence and, despite Villa losing Kamara to suspension following a yellow card, the striker struck again late on.
In the 84th minute, Watkins guided a precise header inside the post to complete the turnaround and seal Villa’s 11th consecutive victory, keeping them within three points of the Premier League leaders.
Chelsea’s first defeat in four matches across all competitions leaves them fifth in the table for now.
