Vincent Kompany Praises Bayer Leverkusen’s Form Under Hjulmand Ahead of ‘Top Match’

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany insists his side’s packed fixture list will not distract them from their Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, as the German champions look to extend their perfect start to the season.
The Bavarians are aiming for a record-breaking 15th consecutive win in all competitions before they travel to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week.
Bayern have already made history this season, setting a new record across Europe’s top five leagues with 14 straight victories following their 4-1 German Cup win over Cologne on Wednesday.
“For me, this is a top match against Leverkusen,” Kompany told reporters on Friday. “There’s also a bit of rivalry from the past two seasons.”
Historic Rivalry and Title Race Context
Leverkusen were unbeaten champions in 2024 and runners-up to Bayern the previous year. They remain on an incredible 37-match unbeaten run away from home and currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga table on 17 points, with Bayern leading on 24.
“I’m not here to decide who our main title rivals are,” Kompany said. “The only thing that matters for me is to win tomorrow. But the rivalry is still there, and we cannot underestimate them given what they’ve achieved in recent weeks.”
Leverkusen’s Revival Under Hjulmand
Leverkusen have found renewed form under new head coach Kasper Hjulmand, who took over after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag just two games into the season. The team has responded impressively, winning four straight league matches to climb back up the table.
Despite selling key players such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong in the summer, the club has successfully rebuilt with a wave of new signings, many of whom have quickly made an impact.
Kompany: “No Excuses Despite the Schedule”
With three matches in seven days, Bayern’s schedule is intense, but Kompany was quick to dismiss any suggestion that fatigue could affect his team’s focus or ambition.
“In our calendar, there’s no such thing as a tough phase,” he said. “We’re used to playing every three days. It doesn’t change our goals or mindset — we go into every game wanting to win.”
Bayern’s remarkable start to the campaign has already surpassed the previous all-time record for Europe’s elite clubs, which was held by AC Milan with 13 straight wins during the 1992–93 season.
“Leverkusen under their new coach have taken 16 out of 18 possible points,” Kompany noted. “They’re in top form again, dangerous in front of goal. They lost a lot of talent, but they’ve also brought in a lot of quality. It will be a real test.”
